There's been a lot of talk about the year 1981 recently as there's 2 birthdays to celebrate this month. And thats because Wavelength Surf Magazine and the Boardmasters Surf Comp. Being 7 years of age at the time I have a vague recollection of both. I remember my dad picking up a copy the first edition of Wavelength Surfing Mag in Stotts newsagents. Back then it was the same size as a newspaper but in colour (which newspapers weren't at the time). He flicked through it ( I expect he quickly decided not to buy a copy for me after seeing the topless page 3 girl ) picked out a decent wave to show me and then put it back on the stand. I asked him if he could buy it and he gave me a stern 'NO' and we left the shop. Well probably not until Howard Stott tried to squirt me with his pretend Tomato Sauce bottle anyway ( RIP Howard ).
As far as Boardmasters goes I think I saw a news clip on TSW ( or possible Westward TV, I'm not sure when this changed over )
So anyway I decided to put together a mix that could have been put together to listen to on the way to the first Boardmasters while reading the first ever edition of Wavelength. And here it is.
